Taraba State University ASUU Strike 2026: Union Bans Online and Physical Lectures as Indefinite Strike Continues

Admin4 min read

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University (TSU) branch, has reaffirmed its decision to continue an indefinite strike, directing members to suspend all teaching and supervision activities, including online lectures, physical classes, project supervision and teaching practice supervision.

The union said the industrial action would remain total and comprehensive until meaningful engagement with the Taraba State Government produces concrete progress towards resolving the issues behind the dispute. The directive was contained in a strike bulletin issued by the branch leadership in October 2026.

According to reports published on October 20 and 21, the union warned lecturers against conducting academic activities through alternative platforms or arrangements intended to bypass the strike directive. It also urged members to remain united and comply fully with the decision of the branch.

Why ASUU at Taraba State University Is on Strike

The current strike began on October 12, 2026, following a prolonged disagreement between the university lecturers and the Taraba State Government over remuneration and outstanding salary payments.

ASUU-TSU identified two major demands behind the industrial action:

  • Immediate implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU remuneration agreement at Taraba State University.
  • Payment of outstanding salary arrears accumulated from January 2026 until the agreed remuneration structure is fully implemented.

The union said it had engaged the state government on the issues since February 2026. Those discussions led to the establishment of a verification committee to assess the existing salary structure and the level of implementation of the remuneration agreement.

According to the union, the committee completed its work and submitted its report on September 24, 2026. However, ASUU-TSU maintained that the expected resolution did not follow, prompting it to proceed with the strike after previously allowing the government additional time.

ASUU Bans Online and Physical Lectures

In its latest communication, the ASUU-TSU leadership instructed members to suspend all teaching-related activities for the duration of the strike.

The directive covers:

  • Physical lectures on campus.
  • Online lectures conducted through digital platforms.
  • Project supervision and other student supervision activities.
  • Teaching practice supervision.
  • Academic activities conducted outside the university premises.
  • Other teaching arrangements that could undermine the union’s collective decision.

The union maintained that the strike must be observed across all academic programmes, regardless of where or how the activities would otherwise take place.

It warned that selective participation in teaching and supervision could weaken the union’s collective bargaining position. Members were therefore urged to follow official communications from the branch leadership rather than rely on rumours or unverified reports suggesting that the dispute had been resolved.

ASUU Says Strike Will Continue Until Meaningful Progress Is Made

The union has not announced a date for suspending the ongoing industrial action. Its position is that the strike will continue until negotiations produce concrete progress on the outstanding issues.

ASUU-TSU also cautioned members against what it described as misleading reports and attempts to undermine the strike. The branch leadership urged lecturers to remain disciplined and united throughout the dispute.

Despite maintaining its firm position, the union said it remained open to dialogue with the Taraba State Government and other relevant stakeholders. It stressed, however, that any engagement must be sincere, timely and directed towards achieving a definite resolution.

The union is asking the government to implement the agreed remuneration framework and settle the outstanding salary arrears rather than prolong the process with further delays.

How the Strike Could Affect Taraba State University Students

The continuation of the strike could disrupt lectures, project supervision, teaching practice and other academic activities at Taraba State University in Jalingo.

Students may experience delays in completing coursework, conducting project research, undertaking teaching practice or participating in scheduled academic activities. The strike could also affect the university’s academic calendar if the disagreement remains unresolved.

Students should monitor official announcements from the university and relevant student bodies for verified information about examinations, academic schedules and any eventual resumption of activities. They should avoid relying on unconfirmed social media posts about a possible strike suspension.

At the time of the latest reports, ASUU-TSU had not announced a resumption date.

What Could End the ASUU Strike at Taraba State University?

The central issues remain the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU remuneration agreement and the payment of salary arrears dating from January 2026.

A resolution will depend on further engagement between the union and the Taraba State Government, including concrete steps to address the outstanding demands. The union has said it is willing to negotiate, but insists that discussions must lead to a definite outcome.

Until an official announcement confirms that the strike has been suspended, lecturers have been directed to continue observing the industrial action.

Students, parents and other stakeholders are advised to follow verified updates from the university and ASUU-TSU for developments concerning negotiations and the eventual resumption of academic activities.
