Recommended Novel for Post-UTME in Nigeria: Best Books to Read

Some candidates preparing for Post-UTME examinations have asked whether the JAMB-recommended novel, Sweet Sixteen, will also be used by universities and polytechnics during their screening exercises. If you have been reading the novel because of your JAMB preparation, you may be wondering whether you should continue studying it for Post-UTME. The important thing to understand is that JAMB and Post-UTME are different examinations, and the materials required for one are not automatically required for the other.

Sweet Sixteen is a novel recommended for the JAMB Use of English examination. Candidates preparing for UTME are expected to study the prescribed literary text because questions may be drawn from it as part of their examination preparation. However, this does not mean that every university, polytechnic, or college of education will use the same novel during its Post-UTME screening. The screening requirements and examination formats are determined by individual institutions, so candidates should not assume that a JAMB-recommended novel will automatically appear in their Post-UTME questions.

Another question candidates frequently ask is whether there is a generally recommended novel for Post-UTME examinations in Nigeria. The answer is that there is no single novel that is universally prescribed for every institution’s screening exercise. Unlike JAMB, which conducts a centralised UTME for candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions, Post-UTME screening is organised by individual universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Each institution may determine the subjects, question formats, and materials relevant to its screening process.

This means that the preparation required for Post-UTME can differ depending on the institution you intend to attend. Some schools may conduct objective examinations based on the subjects candidates selected during JAMB registration, while others may use alternative screening methods or assess candidates through their submitted results. Where an institution provides specific reading materials, recommended texts, or examination instructions, candidates should follow those requirements. It is therefore important to check the official screening information released by your preferred school instead of relying on a general list of recommended novels.

If you are preparing for Post-UTME and have already studied Sweet Sixteen for JAMB, you do not need to assume that the novel will be part of your university screening examination. Instead, confirm the subjects and examination format required by your institution and concentrate on revising the relevant topics. If your school has not announced any recommended novel, avoid spending your limited preparation time searching for a book that may not be required. You can still use your existing JAMB study materials to strengthen your English language skills, but your preparation should reflect the actual screening requirements.

In conclusion, Sweet Sixteen is associated with JAMB Use of English preparation and should not automatically be treated as a recommended novel for Post-UTME examinations. There is no universally prescribed novel for all Nigerian universities and polytechnics because each institution manages its own screening requirements. Candidates should confirm the official instructions for their chosen school, identify the subjects and materials required, and prepare accordingly. This will help you focus on the areas that matter most and avoid unnecessary confusion during your Post-UTME preparation.

Every University and Polytechnic have the right to set screening questions they feel is suitable. Few schools even decide to add current affairs to their Post UTME Screening questions.

As far as I know, there is no recommended novel for Use of English in Post UTME in any Nigerian school. For Post UTME Literature in English, novels can be set based on Jamb standard or announced by the school.

In a situation where the school doesn’t mention novel for literature, simply read other literature topics and follow Waec and Jamb standard of setting questions.

Like I always say, Post UTME is not a very special exam. After going through Post UTME questions for so many schools in Nigeria, I have seen that many schools set Jamb and Waec questions word for word. Others schools twist or modify Olevel questions.

You may be thinking, if Post UTME is just Waec and Jamb standard, why do a lot of persons fail? One of the failure factors in Post Jamb is time.  You’re usually not given enough time to answer questions in the Post UTME Exam hall. This builds up a kind of tension in you which leads to errors.

If you didn’t study very well for Waec and Jamb or either passed by mistake or runs, then post UTME may pull your legs. You are 100% on your own when it comes to Post UTME.

In summary, no generally recommended novel for post UTME in Nigeria. Post-UTME is the same standard as the West African Examination Council and Joint Admission Exam. You can pass without any assistance.
