The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a program established by the Nigerian government in 1973 to promote national unity and development. 

It is a one-year mandatory service for graduates of tertiary institutions, both within Nigeria and abroad, who are 30 years old or younger at the time of graduation.

Degree Classifications in Tertiary Institutions 

In Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, degree classifications are used to determine students academic performance.

This classification is known as Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

These classifications are:

  1. First Class: This is the highest honor, awarded to students with a CGPA of 4.50 to 5.00.
  2. Second Class Upper (2:1): Awarded to students with a CGPA of 3.50 to 4.49.
  3. Second Class Lower (2:2): For students with a CGPA of 2.40 to 3.49.
  4. Third Class: This is the lowest classification for graduates who achieve a CGPA of 1.50 to 2.39.
  5. Pass (Optional): Some universities previously offered this for CGPAs between 1.00 and 1.49, but it is being phased out.
