Is Mathematics Compulsory for Criminology in JAMB 2027?

Yes, Mathematics is generally required for Criminology at O’Level, but whether you must write Mathematics in your JAMB UTME subject combination depends on the university and its approved admission requirements.

This distinction is important. A candidate may need a credit in Mathematics in WAEC, NECO or NABTEB without necessarily selecting Mathematics as one of the four UTME subjects. However, some Criminology programme requirements include Mathematics in the UTME combination too.

1. Is Mathematics compulsory in WAEC or NECO for Criminology?

Yes. You should have a credit pass in Mathematics in your O’Level result.

For Criminology and Security Studies, the commonly listed O’Level requirements include five credit passes, covering:

• English Language

• Mathematics

• Economics

• Two other relevant Arts or Social Science subjects

Your O’Level result may be from WAEC, NECO or an accepted equivalent. Check the requirements of your preferred university because individual institutions may have additional conditions.

2. Is Mathematics compulsory in the JAMB UTME examination?

This is where candidates need to be careful. The UTME subject combination can vary according to the university and the specific Criminology programme.

Some published Criminology requirements list:

1. Use of English

2. Economics

3. Mathematics

4. One of Government, History, Geography, Literature in English, French, CRS or IRS.

Other institution-specific listings show different combinations, so do not assume that every university uses exactly the same subjects.

My advice: If you are preparing for JAMB 2027, do not leave Mathematics out of your preparation. Confirm the exact UTME combination for your chosen university before completing your registration.

3. What are the four JAMB subjects for Criminology?

A commonly listed combination is:

Use the official JAMB eligibility checker to confirm the subjects accepted for your chosen institution and programme: JAMB IBASS Eligibility Checker.

4. Can I study Criminology without Mathematics?

If you do not have a credit in O’Level Mathematics, you may have difficulty meeting the admission requirements for Criminology in many Nigerian universities.

If you already have Mathematics in your O’Level result but do not want to write it in UTME, check whether your preferred university accepts a subject combination without Mathematics. Do not register based on another university’s requirements.
