The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, popularly referred to as UNN, is a top federally owned tertiary institution located in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria.

It has been consistently ranked as one of the top 10 best federal universities in Nigeria for the past years now.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), is one of the most competitive universities in Nigeria, attracting thousands of applicants every academic session.

Admission into UNN is very tough and competitive based on the number of applicants applying to the school, especially for competitive courses like computer science, medicine, law, nursing, pharmacy and accounting.

To gain admission for these courses listed, you would need to perform very well in JAMB UTME and also have good O-level results.

The UNN admission process recently was decided with just JAMB and O level, unlike before when they did write Post UTME exams. Now the school just uses the screening method to admit aspirants into various departments and courses.

The school uses a particular ratio for JAMB and O level; it can be 70:30 or 80:20, where UTME results are given a higher percentage.

Both scores are combined to form an aggregate score, which is then compared with the departmental cut-off mark to determine eligibility for admission into a chosen course.

An aggregate score is the average performance of a candidate, calculated from both their JAMB UTME score and O level. Instead of relying on JAMB alone, UNN uses this combined score to ensure that only the most qualified candidates are offered admission.

It is very important for students to get a very high aggregate score; this would increase one’s chances of admission, especially for competitive courses like medicine, computer science, law, pharmacy, nursing and accounting.

Though, getting a higher aggregate score doesn’t necessarily mean you would just be offered admission, but it would give you an edge over others with lower aggregate scores.

But if you meet the school’s aggregate cutoff mark, you would definitely be given admission except for rare cases where the school’s quota for that particular course has been exceeded. In this scenario, you might just be transferred to a less competitive course.

The aggregate cut-off mark is very important because it serves as the benchmark for admission into different courses.

Each department in UNN sets its own cut-off based on the number of applicants, available spaces, and general performance of candidates.

Meeting or surpassing the cut-off mark significantly increases your chances of securing admission, while scoring below it makes admission into that department unlikely.

How UNN Determines their Cut-Off Mark

UNN determines its departmental cut-off marks based on:

1. Candidates’ Performance: The higher the overall performance in JAMB and Post-UTME, the higher the cut-off.
2. Number of Applicants per Course: Competitive courses like Medicine, Law, Computer Science, Pharmacy, Accounting and Nursing usually have higher cut-offs because of the higher number of applicants applying for these courses.
3. Department Quota: The number of students each department can admit also influences the cut-off.

UNN General Cut-Off Mark

UNN do release their general JAMB cut-off mark every academic session. This cut-off mark is like a threshold every aspirant must reach before being eligible for the post-UTME process.

For this academic session, the school’s general cut-off mark is 160 and above.

UNN Aggregate Cut-Off Mark for All Courses

The truth is that since 2021, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has stopped releasing official departmental cut-off marks. Since then, the school has been using the Post-UTME screening method for its admission process.

Therefore, anything you see online is not officially verified or certified by the school authorities.

However, at Savina Academy, we carried out thorough research by going from department to department, asking old students, excos, etc., about the aggregate scores that got them admitted into UNN. We then carefully compiled this list.

So, the cut-off marks below are just estimates. They may not be exactly UNN’s official cut-off marks, but they should serve as a guide to help you calculate your chances of admission.

Below are the UNN departmental aggregate merit cut-off marks for all courses:

Note that the cut-off mark is only an estimated merit cut-off for all courses. UNN also has other cut-off marks, such as Catchment and ELDS, and releases more than four admission lists every academic session, one of which is the Merit List.

Conclusion

Getting admission into UNN is not really easy because of the high level of competition amongst students, making their cut-off marks for various courses very high, so if you’re applying for UNN admission, it is important for you to perform very well in JAMB UTME and have a strong O’level grade, especially if you’re applying for competitive courses like medicine, law, nursing, computer science, etc.

If your aggregate score is low, you can consider switching to a less competitive course with a lower cut-off.
